About Lower Blepharoplasty

Many consider the eyes to be the “windows to the soul,” and they play a significant role in your aesthetic appearance. However, the eyelids are also one of the first regions to show visible signs of aging, as the eyelid skin is the thinnest in the body. (2) This can cause concerns to easily develop beneath the eyes, such as creases and wrinkles, inelasticity, accumulations of fat, noticeable under-eye bags, and more.

To address these concerns, Dr. Fairchild can perform a lower blepharoplasty. This is a surgical procedure that can remove and reposition excess tissue, skin, and fat along the lower eyelids to revitalize their appearance. By manipulating this region, she can restore a seamless transition between the lower eyelids and cheeks, leaving you looking more well-rested overall.

Benefits

Lower blepharoplasties offer several benefits, including:

  • Refreshed Aesthetics: A lower blepharoplasty can restore a brighter, more alert appearance across the lower eyelids.
  • Restored Definition: Dr. Fairchild can remove excess fat or sagging skin to restore the natural shape and appearance of the lower eyelids.
  • Improved Balance: Enhancing the appearance of your lower eyelids can restore the harmony between your different facial features.
  • Minimal Scarring: Dr. Fairchild takes great care when placing each incision to ensure any post-operative scarring is unnoticeable and may be concealed within the natural contours of your lower eyes.
  • Lasting Results: The results of a lower blepharoplasty can last for many years.
  • Elevated Confidence: Rejuvenating the aesthetics of your eyes can improve your sense of body positivity and self-esteem.
  • Tailored Solutions: No two procedures are the same, as Dr. Fairchild personalizes each one according to the needs, anatomy, and goals of her patient.

Preparation

Once Dr. Fairchild has finalized your lower blepharoplasty, she will give you a set of detailed instructions to help you prepare. These typically include the following, but they may vary according to the details of your treatment plan and medical history:

  • Prepare a Ride Home: Arrange transportation for after your procedure, as you will be unable to drive yourself
  • Coordinate At-Home Care: Have a trusted relative or friend stay with you for the first 24-48 hours of your recovery
  • Alter Your Medication Intake: Discontinue using any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning or antiplatelet properties
  • Arrange For Time Off: Prepare to take time away from your career, personal responsibilities, and other commitments
  • Prepare Your Space: Rearrange your home to create a comfortable recovery space
  • Refrain from Consumption: Cease the use of nicotine or alcohol in the weeks before your procedure and throughout your recovery

Procedure

When you arrive for your procedure, a member of Dr. Fairchild’s team will meet with you to lead you to a private treatment room. They will reconfirm your desired enhancements, cleanse your skin, and transport you to the operating room, where you will receive general anesthesia.

Dr. Fairchild will place an incision either along your lower lash line or within the eyelid itself. These placements are known as the transcutaneous approach and the transconjunctival approach, respectively. (3) Through these incisions, she will remove and reposition the local fat and tissues. She will also tighten any lax muscles and loose skin.

After she has completed each of your corrections, she will ensure they look even and harmonious with the rest of your features. She will then close the incisions and dress the region to protect it.

Recovery

Dr. Fairchild performs lower blepharoplasties on an outpatient basis, which means that she will release you from her care on the same day she performs your procedure. You can expect some initial swelling and bruising, but these effects will dissipate on their own over the following few weeks. You may also manage these effects with over-the-counter medications and by resting with your head elevated.

You will be able to return to your job and other light activities after taking 1 to 2 weeks to rest. However, anything more demanding or vigorous should be avoided until Dr. Fairchild approves your return.

She will provide you with further instructions during your personal consultation. By following them as directed, you can return to your routine quickly, safely, and smoothly.

Results

You will be able to enjoy the full results of your blepharoplasty once any residual swelling has subsided. Your results will vary, but you can expect smoother skin, more defined lower eyelids, a brighter and more alert expression, as well as a more youthful-looking appearance overall.

The results of a lower blepharoplasty are long-lasting, which means that you can enjoy your renewed appearance for several years to come.
