About Upper Blepharoplasty

Over time, the appearance and composition of your skin can change due to age-related factors. These signs often appear first across the eyelids, as the skin in this region is the thinnest on the body. (2) The skin can begin to sag, the fat around your eyes can create a puffy appearance, or lines and creases around the eyes can start to deepen. This can limit your peripheral vision, create downward-facing eyelashes, and give your entire visage an aged or disproportionate appearance. With Dr. Fairchild’s blepharoplasty expertise, you can address each of these concerns and leave looking and feeling refreshed.

Benefits

Upper blepharoplasty offers numerous benefits, including:

  • Smoother Skin: Upper blepharoplasty can eliminate redundant tissue to restore a smoother and tighter look and feel.
  • Minimal Scarring: Dr. Fairchild places each incision along the natural crease of your eye to hide any potential post-operative scarring.
  • Improved Peripheral Field: Upper blepharoplasty can help widen your peripheral vision if drooping eyelid skin has limited it.
  • Lasting Results: The results of upper blepharoplasty can last for many years, making it a worthwhile investment for many patients.
  • Personalized Solutions: Dr. Fairchild tailors the procedure around your specific facial anatomy, concerns, and desired results to achieve results that align with your needs and goals.
  • Elevated Confidence: Improving the appearance of your eyelids may contribute to a greater sense of self-confidence and self-esteem.

Candidates

You may be an ideal candidate for an upper blepharoplasty if you struggle with sagging, wrinkled, or puffy eyelid skin. You may also find this procedure to be beneficial if your eyelid skin has started drooping to where it is limiting your peripheral vision.

To optimize outcomes, you should be in good general health and maintain realistic expectations regarding the results of your procedure. You should also be non-smoking or willing to quit using nicotine.

Personal Consultation

The first step to refreshing your eyelids is a personal consultation with Dr. Fairchild. During this visit, she will take the time to learn more about your motivations and how she can help you. She will review your medical history and discuss your aesthetic goals and concerns. She will also perform a physical examination to assess your facial anatomy, eye shape, and skin quality.

Dr. Fairchild will then use this information to determine whether upper blepharoplasty is right for you and create your treatment plan. Depending on your concerns, she may suggest combining your procedure with either lower blepharoplasty or another facial procedure. She will also take the time to answer any questions you may have.

To schedule this consultation, please contact us online or call (713) 791-0700 to reach our office in Houston.

Preparation

Once you have scheduled your upper blepharoplasty, Dr. Fairchild or another member of her team will provide you with a set of detailed preparation instructions. These instructions are specific to your treatment plan and medical history, but guidelines generally include:

  • Preparing Time Away: Take time away from your career, social commitments, and personal responsibilities to allow yourself time to rest.
  • Coordinating Transportation: Have a trusted friend or family member drive you home after your procedure, and if needed, stay with you for the first 24 to 48 hours of your recovery.
  • Altering Your Medication Intake: Avoid taking any medications or supplements that contain blood-thinning properties.
  • Running Errands: Fill any necessary prescriptions and ensure anything you need for your recovery is set out in areas in your home that are easily accessible to you.
  • Ceasing Any Substance Use: Stop consuming any nicotine or alcohol in the weeks leading up to your procedure and throughout your recovery.

Procedure

Your procedure will begin with Dr. Fairchild cleansing your skin, and you will then receive local anesthesia (with sedation). Dr. Fairchild will place an incision along the natural crease of your upper eyelid. (1) This placement allows her to access the necessary tissues while also concealing any post-operative scarring.

Dr. Fairchild will then proceed to remove or tighten the skin of your eyelids and remove any local fat deposits to restore smoother-looking and feeling eyelids. Once she has finished performing your corrections, she will close the incisions and allow you to rest.

Recovery

Dr. Fairchild performs upper blepharoplasty on an outpatient basis, which means that she will release you from her care on the same day that she performs your procedure. In the initial days of your recovery, it is common to experience some swelling and bruising around the eyelids. These effects will gradually subside over the following few weeks, and you can manage any general discomfort you experience using over-the-counter medications. You will be able to return to work after resting for approximately one to two weeks, with the exact timing varying depending on the extent of your recovery and the rate at which your body heals itself. Any strenuous activities may also be resumed after one week, or with clearance from Dr. Fairchild.

Dr. Fairchild and her team will provide you with detailed instructions to guide you through your recovery. Following them closely makes the process swift, safe, and smooth.

Results

It will take several months for your residual swelling to subside, but once it does, you will be able to enjoy the full results of your blepharoplasty.

Your eyes will appear more open and bright, offering you a more alert and well-rested appearance. Your eyelids will also look and feel smoother and tighter, improving the appearance of your eyelids overall. These effects will last for many years, but it is important to remember that the natural effects of aging will continue to affect your appearance with time.

Corresponding Procedures

Dr. Fairchild can combine your procedure with several others to achieve a deeper, more comprehensive level of facial rejuvenation. During your personal consultation, she can provide personalized suggestions based on your goals.

Lower Blepharoplasty

A lower blepharoplasty can refresh the appearance of the lower eyelids. Dr. Fairchild can pair this procedure with your upper eyelid lift to address sagging skin, excess puffiness, under-eye bags, facial volume loss, wrinkles or creases, and other age-related changes affecting your preorbital aesthetics.

Face and Neck Lift

A face and neck lift rejuvenates the lower and middle portions of your face to restore a more youthful-looking appearance. Dr. Fairchild can perform this procedure to address visible signs of aging and sagging skin along the cheeks, jawline, and neck, allowing you to restore the natural definition of the face. Dr. Fairchild can perform several variations of this procedure to address a wide range of concerns, including:
