Your Breast Augmentation Consultation

During your initial consultation with Dr. Fairchild, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss concerns you have about breast implant surgery. You will learn what to expect from the procedure and during your recovery. With Dr. Fairchild’s guidance you will make important decisions about several aspects of your treatment plan, including:

Incision Type

The two most common types of incisions used in breast augmentation are inframammary and periareolar incisions. The inframammary incision is located in the natural fold underneath the breast while the periareolar incision runs along the lower half of the areola.

Types of Breast Implants

Silicone and saline implants can be used in breast augmentation procedures. Saline breast implants have an outer silicone shell and are filled with salt water during surgery to reach the patient’s desired volume while silicone gel implants come pre-filled with silicone gel. Saline implants tend to be heavier and more prone to rippling, while silicone implants are softer and tend to look and feel more natural. Silicone gel implants are customizable, with various projections and a range of gel cohesivity.

Breast Implant Size

Breast implants come in a range of sizes, measured in CCs. When determining the best size for you, Dr. Fairchild will take into account your natural breast width, as well as your desired projection. During your consultation you will have the opportunity to try on implant sizers, feel sample implants and help choose the size to best meet your cosmetic goals.

Implant Placement

Breast implants can be placed either above (subglandular) or below (submuscular) the pectoralis major muscle. Submuscular implants can provide a more natural-looking breast slope because the top two-thirds of the implant is compressed by the chest wall or chest muscles. This placement also shows less rippling, tends to feel more natural, and has a lower rate of capsular contracture. Subglandular implants are placed under the breast tissue and recovery is often shorter and less painful. Dr. Fairchild will consider your lifestyle and natural breast anatomy to help you determine the ideal placement for you.
